The Bondi Junction attacker who killed six people and left several others seriously wounded has been identified as Joel Cauchi, a 40-year-old Queensland man with mental health issues.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke said police were speaking with Cauchi’s family, and that it appeared the man had moved to NSW last month.

“We are, and have, spoken with his family,” Cooke told media this morning. “We will continue to do so, and they are co-operating with us.”

Cooke backed-up statements last night by NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb who said it was not a “terrorism incident”.

“There is still, to this point … no information we have received, no evidence we have recovered, no intelligence that we have gathered that would suggest that this was driven by any particular motivation – ideology or otherwise,” Cooke said this morning.

“We are continuing to work through the profiling of the offender but very clearly to us at this stage it would appear that this is related to the mental health of the individual involved.”

Cauchi went on a stabbing rampage in Sydney’s upmarket Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre at about 3.30pm yesterday, killing six people and wounding several others, including a nine-month-old baby.

He was shot dead by a senior police officer who was conducting solo patrol work at the time. The officer has now been named as Inspector Amy Scott.

Cooke said Cauchi had been known to police in Brisbane, but regarding prior offending there was “nothing significant”.

Police had inspected a small storage facility Cauchi had obtained after moving to Sydney and investigations were ongoing.

Police said the shopping centre, about 4km from Sydney’s famed Bondi Beach, will remained closed and that the crime scene will “remain ongoing for a number of days”.

The man attacked people on the top two levels of the six-level shopping centre, one of the most affluent malls in the nation.

Australia has extremely low levels of mass murder events, in part due to strict gun ownership laws. The rarity of the event has seen it gain major coverage internationally.
