Authorities have confirmed that at least five people have been killed and several others are fighting for their lives after a man went on a stabbing rampage at Sydney’s Bondi Junction shopping centre this afternoon.
NSW Police have confirmed the alleged attacker was shot dead by a “single unit police officer” who had been nearby the centre, in Sydney’s east, at the time of the attacks.
“The officer was in the facility and in attendance on her own and was guided to the person,” NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke told media this evening.
The officer confronted the man having been “directed by a range of people”.
“She confronted the offender, who had moved by this stage to level five, as she continued to walk quickly behind him to catch up with him. He turned to face her, raised a knife,” Cooke said.
“She discharged a firearm and that person is now deceased.
“It would appear that this person has acted alone and I am content that there is no continuing threat”.
Among those stabbed by the man, who was carrying a knife with a blade of about 20cm, were a woman and a baby.

The man was in the shopping centre around 3pm, before leaving and returning around 20 minutes later with a knife, Assistant Commissioner Cooke said.
Images of the alleged attacker show he appears to have been in his 30s or early 40s wearing an Australian Kangaroos rugby league jersey.
Police did not know the identity of the attacker.
“There is nothing that we are aware of on the scene that would indicate any ideology…we are not ruling out anything at this stage,” Cooke said.
“I don’t have any indication of any motivation at the scene.
“Things are very raw at the moment,” he said.
Shortly after 3pm Sydney time “multiple triple-zero calls” were made and 40 ambulance respondents attended the centre, a NSW Ambulance spokesman told media.
“Four medical teams transported eight patients to various hospital facilities across Sydney and assessed a total of six who have been deemed deceased on the scene,” he said.
The six dead included the alleged attacker.
One short video shows the man riding up an escalator, with another man at the top attempting to push him back.
Assistant Commissioner Cooke said the members of the public had “jumped in and tried to assist”.
